Irish Immigrant Ships

There was a famine in Ireland from 1845-1849. A famine is when there is not enough food and people die from hunger. At that time in Ireland, most people ate potatoes as their main food. Over one million people died and millions of Irish people emigrated to America, Canada, Australia and Britain to find a better life. They had to endure terrible conditions aboard the ‘coffin ships’.

We read a journal written by a nine year old boy during the time of the famine and followed his story to his new home. We then painted the famine ships setting sail across the ocean.
