Making a Monastery

By about AD 530, Christianity had spread to Ireland. Many convents and monasteries were set up all over Ireland. Their ruins may still be seen in places such as Clonmacnoise in Co. Offaly and the Gallarus Oratory in Dingle, Co.Kerry. A monastery at that time was made up of a collection of small buildings surrounded by a wall of stone or earth. They were busy places and Ireland became known as the land of saints and scholars.

We worked together in our groups to create a model of a monastery. When the weather improves we will travel to some local historical sites to discover more about life long ago.
