Trip to Glendalough

On the 31st of May 2013, the two 6th classes from Maynooth BNS went to Glendalough on Pilgrimage. We left the school at 9 o’clock and arrived at Glendalough at about 10:30. The first thing we did was walk around a small labyrinth while Father David told us a bit about St. Kevin and Glendalough and that Glendalough means Gleann Dá Loch (The Glenn of Two Lakes). After, we walked down a steep hill to St. Saviour’s church and learned a bit about him and when he came to Glendalough. After a while we walked back up the hill and went to St. Kevin’s well where we got a bottle of Holy Water from the well.

We then had our lunch. After lunch we went to the Monastic City and visited Trinity Church and the Round Tower. The round tower in Glendalough is 100 feet (30 metres) high and was built in the 16th Century. We hugged St. Kevin’s cross which is supposed to be good luck and we walked under two headstones which was also supposed to be good luck. We then walked up a really big hill and Father David told us the interesting story about St. Kevin and the blackbird and what year St. Kevin founded Glendalough. We then had our big lunch and past a civil ceremony. After our big lunch we played a soccer match between the two classes. Mr Murphy’s class won of course 3-1. We then walked the long way back to the bus. It was a great and extremely enjoyable trip.
